The Value of “Small” Success
Have you ever felt like you want to do something but, you just don’t know how? You just don’t know where to start. Maybe you have already started a project and you know what you need to do but, you just never seem to find the time to do it.
If you have felt this way take heart that you are not alone!
The good new’s is there is a way for you to overcome this feeling and acheive results with which, you may even astound yourself! All you need is the tool of “small success”. In other words - You need to start feeling the success!
When we start feeling the success we are creating then we start to feel more in control and more powerful. We begin to feel more motivated because we have already experienced the feelings of being successful.
The way we go about this is to start achieving “small success”. We take a very easily achieved step and we reward ourselves for succeeding at it.
For instance:
Imagine you want to start your own business and you don’t have a clue where to start. You may want to first figure out what type of business you would enjoy running. Setting aside 15 minutes to do nothing but brainstorm the type of business you want would be a great first step. Then after you have completed this brainstorming activity, pat yourself on the back for a job well done. You have jumped the hurdle of doing nothing to accomplishing your first task successfully! (Even if you still don’t know what business you want you at least now have a better idea and your first task is still successfully completed.)
The more small successes you experience the better you feel and the more in control you become. Small successes add up to large successes! Pretty soon you may have completed 10 small successes such as brainstorming your business idea’s, deciding on two to three of these idea’s you like best, choosing on of the three you have narrowed down, investigating the market for your business, contacting the SBA or SCORE to learn more about how to run your business, creating a business plan, researching funding options, deciding how you will fund your business, looking for a location to start your business, renting a place for your business, setting up your business……
Most of the time the action you choose to take is less important than the fact that you have taken an action of some kind. Getting the ball in motion and continuously taking action toward your goal, will eventually lead you where you want to go!
I have had people argue - “but if you just keep taking action to keep yourself busy then you are just spinning your wheels and you still never get anywhere.” To this I say “true, if you are only taking action to keep yourself busy your right you won’t go far. However, if you have a goal and you continuously take action that takes you toward that goal (regardless of how small that action seems) it will always get you closer to where you want to be. If you do this enough you will eventually reach your destination!
