You Don’t Really Know It Until You Use It
We can read hundreds of personal development books, watch videos, listen to audio programs, and go to the seminars and still live in mediocrity. Information is not knowledge until we can use it.
We can show a child how to hit a baseball. We can tell him all there is to know about the science behind how it works. We can even let him feel the bat in his hands but, until he hits a few himself he doesn’t really know how to hit the ball.
Personal development will do you no good if you are just gathering information. If you want to improve you have to take action. Sure, it feels good to read a great motivational book, listen to a powerful audio, or spend a few hours at a seminar. We feel like we are doing great things and, if we use it we are.
More than 90% of the people who go to personal development seminars go home and do — Nothing. They have a good time. They feel motivated. They feel inspired. On drive home they make all kinds of plans. They get up in the morning go to work and do the same old thing. They come home and do the same old thing.
I’m not saying there is no benefit in this. In fact, I used to be one of those people. I’d spend hundreds of dollars travel 2000 miles away to go to some rally that I heard I just had to be at then, I’d do the same old thing. Many of these seminars I went to gave me some of the most powerful information I still use today.
If we want to create a better life we need to take action. Action is the link between information and knowledge. It is the step that takes you from where you are to where you want to be.
Many times we do not take any action at all because we are overwhelmed by the size of the goals we have set. We take no action at all rather than trying to take on the enormous task. Hey listen, we don’t have to do it all at once. We don’t walk a mile in one gigantic step. We take hundreds of little steps.
We double our chances of completing a project if we just take the first step. The after taking that first step we can take the first step after that, then the first step after that. If you take enough first steps one of two things will happen. You will complete the project, or you will gain such momentum and have so much fun that you reach your goal and keep on going!
Just take the first step! Even if you have to take the first step 1,000 times.
