Interview With Susan RoAne

Talking to people is a critical tool to success.  People simply can not get to know you, or about you if you do not let them.  If you don’t talk to people they don’t know you exist.  If they don’t know you exist, they cannot know what you have to offer.  Yet, talking to others is a major stumbling block for many people.

Today, I would like to introduce you to a woman, whose work can help all of us improve our skills in “Mingling”.

Susan RoAne known as “The Mingling Maven” is an absolutely amazing woman.  She is the author of many bestselling books which include “How to Work a Room”, “The Secrets of Savvy Networking”, “What Do I Say Next”, and “How to Create Your Own Luck”.

She also is a Keynote speaker with major corporation clients, which I will quote from her own website as “AT&T, Apple, Coca-Cola, Time Warner, Office Depot, Boeing, Citigroup, Ernst and Young, Oracle, Procter and Gamble, National Association of Television Producers and Executives, National Football League and, her personal favorite, Hershey’s Chocolate.”

As you can tell Susan is an incredibly busy person.  She is in the midst of a new book which you can read about here.  But, she did take the time to answer a few interview questions for me.

1-  How did you become interested in the art of “Mingling”?  It’s  a long story…. In the beginning, we had a group in San Francisco Women Entrepreneurs.. and the “cocktail” hour is where we had the opportunity to socialize, chat and connect.  Sadly people turned this wonderful “mingling” moment into “networking” and that changed the landscape.

2-  Why did you choose to teach others the art of mingling?   I started teaching people ®and the original subtitle of the book was.   How to Successfully Manage the Mingling.

3-  Who were your main mentors?  Sally Livingston to whom the book is dedicated and who made up the term “FEMTOR” in 1983 taught  me that I had the knack and skill of presenting with a sense of humor. I designed one of the first career change workshops for teachers (as San Francisco had laid off 1200 teacher , including me in 1979) and hired Sally to teach this process called networking. And, why did you choose them? My mentors happened organically.

4-  If you could teach only one lesson what would that be?  Be nice in every room.

5-  What advice would you give someone who wants to follow in your footsteps? Join National Speakers assn, prepare to pay dues for a long time, be respective of people’s time, be prepared to work hard, long hours and be an ace at followup and ALWAYS minds your manners in the most Savvy way.

6-  What are you most thankful for in your life?  That I am thankful and appreciate people.

Thank you, Susan for taking time out of your busy schedule.  You are an inspiration to everybody who wants to achieve success!!!

  1. Greg Butler:

Thanks for publishing that interview, Priscilla. I will read more of her thoughts, thanks to you. I was just recently thinking that I need to get back into public speaking. I did quite a bit of it in the 1980s.

Until now, I never even thought about mingling as an art form to practice. I’ll start practicing on it this weeekend.

  2. priscilla:

I hope you enjoy her work as much as I do Greg.

You have some great stuff on your blog as well. Keep up the good work.
