Choose Yourself
Self development is a continuous journey in which we are constantly choosing new paths. There is no one correct choice for anybody. We are all artists of our own lives. We can paint anything we like.
Humans have the awesome power to decide. If we don’t like our personality we can change it. If we don’t like our career we can pick a new one. We can choose any set of beliefs. We decide how to dress and what we drive. Even our likes and dislikes can be changed if so choose. Our choices are endless.
People sometimes fail to make a decision about what they want to be in life because they are afraid to make the wrong choice. They are overwhelmed with the unlimited possibilities. What if I make the wrong choice? What if I do this for the next five years and decide I don’t like it? Truthfully this could happen, but even if we don’t make a choice that time is going to pass anyway. If you don’t make a choice of some sort you will get what’s left after everyone else picked what they wanted. When you decide on your own path you develop skills that compliment your personality and the type of work you enjoy. These same skills will go with you into your new career.
If you don’t know what you want to do with your life then grab a pen and some paper. Go somewhere where you can concentrate with out distraction. Start writing down everything you enjoy. Don’t worry at this point about money just what you like to do. Write down anything that comes to mind. Spend at least twenty minutes doing this. Think hard… Don’t let yourself off easy. This is important.
When your done write a second list this time of everything that is important to you. Put just as much time and effort into this list as you did your first.
Now lay both lists in front of you. Go through each one and circle your top 5 to 10 answers on each list. What can you do with your life that combines all or most of these things? Maybe you look at your list of things you enjoy and you find you like sports, talking to people, and leading activities. Then you look at your list of things that important to you and see that it’s important to you to help people, make a contribution, and feel important.
Make one last list. What jobs can you think of that include these aspects? Sports medicine? Own your own gym? Coach? Therapist? Sport radio announcer? Sports agent?
What ever you decide is fine. At least you decided for yourself. Remember if your don’t choose what you want out of life then your just going to get what’s left over. I certainly don’t want to just accept what nobody else wanted.
Don’t settle!!! You only get one chance to live this life. Have fun with it.
